“…That’s why I think the scene where Elena drowns beneath Wickery Bridge is one of the greatest scenes that the show has ever had. Here is why I also think it is one of the worst: because Stefan saved her in the flashback. I have never been more disappointed by a show’s slavish devotion to its established narrative and character dynamic than I was by The Vampire Diaries in the moment that he appeared at her father’s window — because it positioned his narration of events as reliable when Stefan is at his most interesting when read as unreliable and self-mythologising. There was a brief, shining period at the start of this season where it seemed like the show was deliberately deconstructing the idea of Stefan-as-hero and questioning the assumption that Stefan’s word on events is gospel. We know that Stefan lies: we know that he has repeatedly lied about who he is — we’ve seen him do it — and yet the show repeatedly stops short of the explicit, textual acknowledgement of this facet of his personality which would make engaging with him and by extension the show gratifying rather than frustrating.
That’s why for over a year I have wanted the show to flash back to the night her parents died in order to reveal that it was Damon, not Stefan, who saved her life. I can’t tell you how much I wanted this. Nothing could have been a more perfect deconstruction of the two of them as characters — Stefan, who needs people to see him as a hero more than he needs to be a hero; Damon, who needs people to see him as a villain more than he needs to be a villain — or the way they function as a duality and construct their identities in relation to (1) each other, and (2) Elena than the revelation that Stefan’s telling of this most pivotal moment in the show’s history and Elena’s life is flat-out wrong. It would have been the glorious, transcendent pay-off to all the times when Stefan chose to curry favour with Elena rather than pursue the actual most morally defensible course of action — and all the times when Damon actively took on the mantle of villain in order to preserve Stefan’s status as hero (notably in “All My Children” when he chose to kill Abby rather than allow Stefan to fall from grace in Elena’s eyes). It would have been the pay-off to repeated instances in the past few episodes of Stefan unambiguously implying that the only reason he has stopped killing people is in order to redeem himself in Elena’s eyes. It would have been the pay-off to the conversation Elena and Damon had in “Heart of Darkness” when Elena first began to realise that Damon was hiding his ‘light’ (to the limited extent that he even has one) under a bushel and Damon explicitly told her that he doesn’t want her or anyone else to think of him as a good person.
If Elena becoming a vampire is supposed to catalyse her re-examination of Stefan versus Damon — and apparently it is — then this revelation could have been the only thing that really changed the state of play in that respect. Elena has had chance after chance to realise that Stefan is not who he says he is as he rips his way across state lines; — only the revelation that the foundation on which their relationship was built is a lie could rock it. Nothing else is powerful enough to do it: not the revelation in “Blood Brothers” that Stefan killed their father and forced Damon to transition; certainly not the revelation that Damon once told her he loved her and immediately took away her memory of the event (as if anyone, including Elena, is under any illusions about Damon’s feelings for Elena at this point). It has to be something which challenges the very framework through which Elena views Stefan, Damon, and their brotherhood.
For this episode to reveal that it was Damon, and not Stefan, who saved her would have cast the whole show in a new and infinitely more complex light which brought the interesting deconstruction of hero versus villain that Stefan and Damon’s relationship could and in fact should be to the surface – and for the first time it would have made the idea that Elena could ever choose Damon over Stefan even remotely believable. Beyond even that, because this is Damon we’re talking about, I think it would have forced Elena and by extension the show to acknowledge that one good deed does not make someone a good person when they have decades of bad ones in their past. Redemption does not come that easily. But then it is painfully clear at this point that The Vampire Diaries is not interested in exploring the concept of redemption with Damon or any of the other myriad characters in desperate need of it — let alone in undermining the idea of Stefan and Elena as endgame in any real way. Thus, it had to be Stefan. It’s always going to be Stefan.”
Such a spot on analysis of what I thought could be the truth long ago. I never fully trusted Stefan’s tale of his rescue of Elena was the entire truth. I kind of wish the author of this review would have been the one to write the finale. I just have this feeling that the writers are afraid to alienate Stelena fans. There were times that briefly I felt Damon had a chance but knew deep down they were not going to let it happen. I just don’t believe that Damon is the villain and Stefan is the hero. Stefan is always forgiven for his relapses when in the entire span of the show Damon has never lost control and gone on a killing spree to the degree of Stefan.
Also, if Damon was the one there when Matt and Elena went over Wickery Bridge, Elena would be alive. He would not of listened to her and saved her first. He does whats best for Elena even if Elena does not agree. But the type of person Elena is (the human version at least) would have no regrets about Stefan saving Matt.

Two of the biggest sci-fi titles of all-time — Doctor Who and Star Trek: The Next Generation — will join forces in their first officially commissioned comic-book crossover. Released by IDW Publishing, Star Trek: The Next Generation/Doctor Who: Assimilation2 will launch in May.
In the eight-issue series, the Doctor and his companion will team up with Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise against an unholy alliance between the Borg and the Cybermen. Scott and David Tipton, the authors behind Star Trek: Infestation, will be assisted by Doctor Who writer Tony Lee, with artwork by J.K. Woodward.
